My water service has been interrupted, or I’m experiencing unusually low
water pressure. What should I do?
top
If you find yourself without water service or with a significant
decrease in water pressure, please follow these suggested procedures:
- Check with neighbors in your area and find out if they are
experiencing similar problems.
- If no one else is having a problem, check your water meter.
If the needle or small triangle is moving, you have a leak on
your line and you will need to repair the line or contact a
plumber.
- If others are experiencing the same problem, contact our
office to report the outage/reduction in pressure at 205-629-5801,
24 hours a day.
How do I check for a water leak?
top
- Turn all water-using appliances off. This includes all fixtures
inside and outside the house such as: showers, sinks, washing
machines, and any appliance that uses water. If you have a
sprinkler system, turn off the controller and shut off both
valves at the double check valve assembly to isolate the irrigation
system.
- Remove the lid from your meter box and lift the cover
off the water meter.
- Watch the meter. Your meter has a triangular red or silver and
black round disc. This device is commonly called a "leak indicator."
- If it is spinning, you have a leak. If you do not have a
"leak indicator" and the meter dial hand is moving, water is
running somewhere in your system and you have a leak (go to step 4).
- If the dial hand is not moving, note its position and wait
10 minutes. Check the meter again. If the dial hand has
moved, you have a slow leak (go to step 4). If not, you do not
have a leak.
- Locate the main shut-off value to your house. This is typically
located close to the meter box.
- Turn off the valve.
- Turn on a fixture, such as a faucet, in the house to test.
- If water is flowing from the faucet after several seconds,
the shut-off valve is not working.
- If no water is flowing from the faucet, the valve is
working properly (go to Step 7)
- Check if the leak indicator's hand on your water meter is
moving.
- If the leak indicator or meter dial hand is moving,
water is flowing between the meter and the shut-off
valve. This means you have a leak between the meter
and the shut-off valve.
- If no indicators are moving, then you have a leak between
the shut-off valve and the house (or possibly somewhere inside
the house). Check faucets, toilets, washing machines, etc.,
for leaks.
